The tough tests continue…

Through 5 events this year, the Long Beach State 49ers have the 12th toughest strength of schedule of all Division I men’s golf programs.  As a coach, I want our players competing against the best teams in the country week in and week out.  This year’s schedule has allowed us to see the best teams from the Pac-10, SEC, ACC and Big 12.  It’s been a fantastic experience for this young team as they are able to see the teams ahead of us in the rankings and challenge our guys to compete with the best in college golf.

The tough test continues this week as we head to the California desert to compete in the Wyoming desert classic.  The Classic Club will host this 20 team field that is highlighted by #9 Texas A&M, UNLV, and New Mexico.  This event will be a great opportunity to earns some wins head to head against our west coast rivals.

As we move forward each year my scheduling will continue to stay tough.  It’s important for me to challenge my players against the nations top talent on the top courses in the country.  Soon enough we will be competing with the best for tournament titles and these experiences in these tough fields will prove invaluable.

Next year’s fall schedule is set and looks like this:

Sept 24-26, 2011 Kikkor Husky Invitational (University of Washington), Seattle WA, Gold Mountain Golf Complex

Oct 9-11, 2011 The Prestige at PGA West (Stanford/UC Davis), La Quinta CA, Norman Course at PGA West

Oct 30-Nov 1, 2011 Gifford Collegiate (UCLA), Gilroy CA, CordeValle Golf Club

First Tee of Los Angeles

It was one of our goals to start the season…We sat together in our first team meeting and decided we would do things different.  One thing that each member of the team agreed upon was we needed to do more to give back.  This year Austin Love and Raymond Ho have taken the lead on our community service efforts.  They have organized great events for us throughout the fall and spring including helping with charity golf events benefiting great causes, local elementary fitness days and today’s first tee clinic.

Today’s effort was phenomenal…the program brought together players and coaches from Long Beach State, UCLA, LMU and USC.  The players and coaches did a phenomenal job helping the kids learn new aspects of the game focusing on the fundamental principles.  We broke up into four groups focusing on putting, chipping, full swing and a rules/etiquette/mindset discussion.  We had a blast with all of the kids who came from all over greater Los Angeles.

I can honestly say as a coach that these days are some of the most memorable for all of us involved.  There’s nothing like seeing the excitement from the juniors when the get a chance to hang with the college kids.  All the players did a fantastic job making the kids feel special while helping them get better.  I was stoked to see the juniors all leave with autographed school golf balls and smiles from ear to ear…

Not to mention the guys got a lot of practice signing autographs…Great day for all involved.

First week notes…

We are almost through the first week of spring practice and things are off to a great start. In my first season here at Long Beach State, I am thankful I have a small team of guys to work with (6 to be exact).  I have experienced team’s as large as 15 (Duke) and team’s as small as 5 (Duke as well, long story)…but having six here at LB it’s great to really learn about these guys in great detail in our first season together.

We played 9 holes at Virginia yesterday and looked incredibly sharp.  The short games were solid, touch on the greens looked better than I ever remembered seeing it in the fall, and most importantly they looked fresh.  This is something as a coach I really want to be conscious of this spring.  These guys have a lot going on as student-athletes these days…School, Golf, Workouts, team meetings, community service, travel…I mean it hardly leaves time for anything else, but this team has accepted that and they are committed to doing this gig and doing it great.

We have designed some solid workout plans for each guy this week.  Each player is going to be on a different plan this spring based on our collaboration.  Phil and I have been working hard on his wheel, specifically his diet and workouts.  What I am most excited for in Phil’s plan is his eagerness to track his practice plans, workouts, and eating habits so we can look back after Nationals and see what was most successful for him.

The goal is to start to play more golf courses in the area…This spring in addition to Virginia CC, we will be playing Sea Cliffs CC as well as Industry Hills.  I am extremely excited to be adding these 3 great tracks to our plate…I have always been a huge fan of Industry, I think those two courses could be two of the best in California…so tough and a great challenge for our guys.  Can’t wait to get out to Sea Cliffs and Industry.  The staff and members at these courses have been phenomenal and we can’t thank them enough for their generosity in having us out.

The Thursday practice at El Dorado was solid.  After a below average day with the wedges inside 120 at Virginia, the guys spent some solid time grinding their wedges.  Our wedge green at El Do is probably my favorite aspect of that practice facility, I am glad to see the boys grinding it out on one of the most important aspects of the game.

Tomorrow we will tee it at VCC in the AM.  We will be starting a season long intersquad competition.  The winner (both individually and team games) each day will earn points toward a year end prize…Should be exciting and fun to follow…I will keep you updated as the season progressed.

On a lighter note, today was highlighted by possibly the worst two outfits I have seen in a few years…and the peeps we hang around can throw some wild stuff out there…but Raymond and Austin take the cake with these two clown outfits today…Let’s go gents, pack your golf clothes with the lights on next time.

That’s it for now!  More updates to come soon.  Check back this weekend as I will have an update from a joint community service project.  All the LA Area colleges are working together on a First Tee project for some junior golfers…should be sweet, time to give a little back!

WNLB?  Peace.
